New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough's NFL debut is a perfect snapshot of the rollercoaster that a rookie QB can take you on. One minute he makes a costly mistake, but the next, he makes up for it.
Linebacker Demario Davis has gone on to praise the rookie quarterback on national television. "I think there is no greater representation of New Orleans," the future hall of famer said. "What's the worst thing you think you can do as a quarterback? To throw a pick six. And in his first preseason game, he (Shough) comes back the next drive and throws a bomb for a touchdown. That's ultimate resiliency."
Shough said that he was just smiling on the sideline following the pick six. "We were like, 'hey man, this is part of it. Y'know i'm throwing that nine times out of 10. It's exactly what we wanted," the rookie said after the game. "He (Eric Rogers) made a really good play, but we knew we were going to get the ball back and drive down the field and score. Everybody was on the same page."
How Tyler Shough can build on his Saints preseason debut
Officially, Tyler Shough completed 15/22 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown, and one interception on Sunday afternoon in SoFi. That impressive performance follows what some in the media were calling his best practice yet.
Shough has truly managed to really make it a coin toss as to who the week one starter could be, because it's not like Spencer Rattler, the assumed leader, ran away with it. He had a turnover himself on Sunday (on a sack fumble) along with completing 7/11 of his passes for 53 yards.
The upcoming joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams also provides Shough an opportunity to make another step towards becoming the QB1 in New Orleans. If he can impress against their defensive starters not even a week after impressing against the Chargers, he might take the lead in the quarterback competition.
