The New Orleans Saints hold the number 8 pick in the NFL Draft and are expected to target a wide receiver, but the Washington Commanders at number 7 are also in the mix for the same group of prospects. Both teams could ultimately shape how the top of the receiver board unfolds.
However, a Bleacher Report trade prediction has Washington trading for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, which could clear path and simplify things for New Orleans on draft night. If Washington addresses its receiver need through a trade instead of the draft, it would significantly reduce the chances of a top pass catcher coming off the board at number 7.
“The Commanders aren't swimming in picks, but do possess four Day 3 selections. One of these could be used to reunite Aiyuk with Jayden Daniels, recreating a pairing that found success at Arizona State in 2019. Aiyuk led the Sun Devils with a team-high 65 catches for 1,192 yards and eight touchdowns during that season.”
Brandon Aiyuk to the Washington Commanders could gift New Orleans Saints their dream draft selection
The Washington Commanders have a serious need at the wide receiver position. Outside of Terry Mclaurin, and Deebo Samuel, there is a significant void to fill, as the unit struggled with consistency and durability last season. The lack of reliable depth makes a move like this a realistic possibility as they aim to return to the form that carried them to a 2024 NFC Championship appearance.
Several mock drafts have the first wide receiver coming off the board outside the top 5 picks, reflecting a class where teams at the top are prioritizing other positions. With the Washington Commanders potentially addressing its receiver need through trade, it further increases the Saints likelihood that all of the receiver options of their choice will still be available when they are on the clock at pick number 8.
The addition of Aiyuk to Washington would satisfy both parties, as Washington receives another dynamic receiver to pair next Terry Mclaurin and the Saints increase their chances of picking the receiver of their choice. If this happens it will be an NFL Draft day gift for New Orleans, potentially allowing them to sit back and watch the board fall perfectly in their favor.
