On the ninth day of training camp, the New Orleans Saints once again rotated the quarterbacks. Spencer Rattler, a second-year man out of South Carolina, ran with the third team for the first time on Saturday.
Previously, Rattler ran with the first and second teams. Jake Haener ran with the second team, and rookie QB Tyler Shough ran with the first team. This was also the first time Haener playing with the second team offense.
The news shouldn't come as a surprise, as the team has expressed multiple times that it is an open battle for the QB1 spot, so some rotation is bound to happen. Head coach Kellen Moore said that it was just balancing out the rotations. "We're really just looking at the numbers on an off day and just making sure that we keep rotating these guys and going through that."
Third team reps didn't slow down Spencer Rattler
However, Spencer Rattler had no stutter in his step as he walked out onto the practice field. In fact, Saturday was also the second time that Rattler was one pass away from completing all of his attempts and the second time he missed the mark due to a drop. All of this contributes to why most Saints media members consider him the QB1.
He's also no stranger to starting an NFL game. Last season, he started six games and broke the record for most passing yards in a season by a rookie quarterback for the Saints with 1,317 yards. However, Rattler lost all six of those starts.
Once again, Rattler has no stutter in his step. In an interview with Yahoo Sports earlier this week, the second-year QB said that being thrown into the fire woke him up. “I think I grew a lot. Really feel more decisive now. Just feel like I can use my legs more; that’s an advantage to me."
