The New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers are two teams with very different quarterback situations. While New Orleans has found their franchise QB in Tyler Shough, Pittsburgh is set to head into another year without one, waiting to see if Aaron Rodgers is going to play or not. While they sit in that uncertainty, adding a player like Spencer Rattler would be a smart safety net.
Fansided's Austen Bundy acknowledged the team wants to run it back with an Aaron Rodgers who has ben on the edge of retirement for years. Bundy correctly points out banking on Rodgers returning is a risky gamble. If he retires, the Steelers are left with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. "General manager Omar Khan should consider calling a team with a veteran option who still has enough treads on their tires to give Rudolph and Howard competition in training camp," Bundy wrote.
Such a team does exist, and that team is the one hailing from Crescent City. Bundy pointed out that the door might be open now for Rattler to play for the Steel City. A former fifth-round pick who's started almost a full season in the NFL, he's also someone that the Saints can afford to ship off from the team.
Saints QB Spencer Rattler's days in New Orleans might be numbered
Spencer Rattler could very well be a New Orleans Saint next season; however, he'll have to go through yet another quarterback competition. Last week the team signed former first-round pick Zach Wilson, who has been with multiple teams through several situations in his career. The signing insinuates that the Saints want more out of their quarterback room, with head coach Kellen Moore saying that they want it to be "as competitive as possible."
In his career, Rattler has played in 16 total games for the Saints, completing 304 of his passes for 2,903 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The starter for the 2025 season, he was benched for the rookie sitting behind him after a 23-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which was the team's seventh of the season.
Wilson is a much more experienced quarterback in comparison, having played in 38 games between two teams (New York Jets and Miami Dolphins) in his five-year career. Although one thing that Rattler has over him is that he doesn't have more career interceptions than touchdowns, with Wilson having 23 TDs and 25 INTs.
Albeit that the probability that Rattler won't be on the Saints has risen every day since Wilson signed, it doesn't mean that he'll just roll over. It won't be his first rodeo, or even his second. This kind of situation he's been in before and has gotten out of it each time. Either way it turns out for him this time, it's sure to make the offseason practices even more exciting than they already are.
