Spencer Rattler was officially named the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback on Tuesday after a tightly contested battle with rookie Tyler Shough. Rattler’s circumstance differ from last year as he has ample talent around him to lead the team. The situation is clear, and there shouldn’t be any excuses why Rattler can’t spearhead a strong offense. If he struggles, Shough is right behind him, awaiting his opportunity.
Rattler went winless in the six games he started last year. This was permissible as his receiving corps was devastated by injuries. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed played in his first start then both got injured for the rest of his appearances. This didn’t allow the Saints to get a complete look at Rattler, only a hindered view.
New Orleans’ receiving room is improved going into 2025. Olave and Shaheed are both fully healthy, Mason Titpon had an amazing preseason, plus they added Brandin Cooks, Devaughn Vele and Trey Palmer. Rattler won't have a shortage on weapons, barring any injuries. This gives Rattler a golden opportunity to prove he is worthy of being the starting QB.
Saints fans won’t be patient
Rattler can’t start the season slow. Saints fans aren’t going to give him much slack. Even if he doesn’t win, it’s paramount that he keeps the games close and shows his potential. Fans will be calling for Tyler Shough as soon as Rattler starts playing badly. He won’t have any leeway.
It’s not that Shough is better than Rattler, it’s all in the fans' expectation for the rookie.
Shough wasn’t thought of as a day two draft pick prior to a few weeks before the draft. This made his selection to the Saints shocking to many fans. This reaction has made them eager to see what the team has in Shough. They want to be reassured that the pick was worth it and not a reach. Due to this, they will be calling on Shough at the first signs of struggle from Rattler.
Spencer Rattler has no excuses if he performs poorly in 2025. He has ample weapons around him and a new, offensive minded head coach. If he starts to struggle, fans' opinions of him will fall quickly. He needs to perform well or Shough will be called on.
