Second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler has managed to keep the good times coming, building off of his success in organized team activities with an impressive showing on the first day of New Orleans Saints minicamp.
Rattler made the play of the day today with a sideline pass to running back Xazavian Valladay. Rattler would end the day with 10 completions on 15 attempts—there was a possible interception, but rookie cornerback Jonas Sanker possibly fumbled the ball as he hit the ground.
That one possible interception by Sanker would've been the first one thrown by Rattler on the days open to the media. In fact, until today, he was yet to have more than two incompletions in open practices. That is how efficient Rattler has been this offseason.
Spencer Rattler started six games his rookie year, losing all six. He completed 130 passes on 228 attempts for 1,317 passing yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. With those 1,317 passing yards, Spencer Rattler would establish a new rookie record for passing yards, surpassing the previous record of 1,164 yards, which Archie Manning set in 1971.
Spencer Rattler versus Tyler Shough
The Saints quarterback battle will take center stage this offseason. Kellen Moore drafted Tyler Shough in the second round of the NFL draft. As well as as Rattler plays, everything will be compared to his competition.
Rattler doesn't seem stressed about the competition aspect of the offseason. "I feel like iron sharpens iron; I respect these guys in the room. We all work well together." Rattler said after the first day of minicamp. "Competition is good for everybody."
If Tuesday's minicamp was indication, Rattler was right about the competition being good for everybody. Shough finished the day with 11 completions on his 16 attempts. This is another practice that may be difficult to concretely say who had the better day. When both quarterbacks are playing well, you're content with it being difficult to determine a daily winner.
