Signing Breece Hall sounds tempting, but wrong call for Saints long term

As appealing as signing Breece Hall is, it would also be a financially irresponsible move for the New Orleans Saints to make. Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus believes Hall's ideal landing spot is in New Orleans with the Saints. Whether it's finances or fit on the team, the Saints should avoid signing him to a deal.

Hall is a young running back formerly of the New York Jets, who just got his first 1,000 yard rushing season. A dynamic player, it's not just Jahnke that's saying he should sign with the Saints. Fans across the Who Dat Nation have also been wanting him in New Orleans.

However, for all the impact that he may bring to the Saints, Hall could cost over a third of the team's projected cap space in 2026. Granted, that is a number that's unclear to determine right now, but if they play their cards right, Mickey Loomis and Co. could have around $27 million to spend. Hall just hasn't done enough yet for the Saints to give him his projected market value of $41.5 million over four years.

Breece Hall is not the best choice for a crowded Saints running back room

Hall himself wouldn't be happy in the Crescent City, because if he did sign here, it's doubtful he'd be the top running back. Alvin Kamara is still on the team, and until he retires, it's doubtful someone else will take that mantle. There's also Devin Neal, who will be in his second season next year. When Kamara was out with an injury, Neal performed admirably, getting better each game until his hamstring injury. That's another name that could potentially cause some roster discomfort.

Furthermore, Hall was nearly top 10 in the league in rush attempts with 243. There's no way he'll get that much with the Saints, who haven't had a running back get more than 200 attempts since 2017 (Mark Ingram II with 230).

If the Saints really want to add another running back, the draft in April is really where they should look. Plenty of running backs there (Jeremiyah Love, Kaelon Black, Nicholas Singleton) could help out the Black and Gold next year.
