The East-West Shrine Bowl has come and gone, with the West winning 21-17 over the East. UTSA linebacker Shadrach Banks Jr. was one of top players on the day.
Banks Jr. wasn't even supposed to be at the Shrine Bowl, as he was only there as an injury replacement. Getting there to Dallas on the second day of practice, he really took advantage of the opportunity.
He started out the game on fire, making stops on the first two kickoffs for the West. Additionally, he had multiple big tackles, some run stops, and an impressive pass deflection. Watched closely by the Saints, who had four coaches for the West, Banks Jr.'s name was probably highlighted and underlined. He would be a welcome addition to the linebacker room, one that might be without star LB Demario Davis in 2026.
Shad Banks Jr. could help out on more than just the defense
Shad Banks Jr. also has all the traits to be a successful player on special teams. He has high-level speed, elite open-field tackling ability, and a lionhearted mentality. Furthermore, he has experience on offense, as he was a four-star wide receiver out of high school. That gives Banks Jr. a better sense of what the returner might do than others in his draft class.
That skillset is something that would benefit any one of the 32 teams in the NFL; however, the Saints are particularly in need of help in the special teams department. They were last place in kicking and punting statistics, as well as 22nd in return yards.
The special teams struggles also can't be blamed solely on coordinator Phil Galiano. In 2025, Galiano had to deal with massive roster turnover, such as Jonas Sanker becoming a starting safety, the release of elite gunner J.T. Gray, and the trade of Rashid Shaheed. A good role player could do him and that side of the ball wonders.
Currently projected to be a late day three pick, Banks Jr. would be a good depth piece in New Orleans. He could help bring some consistency to special teams, and has the potential to have an impact on the defensive side of the ball.
