To put it bluntly, the New Orleans Saints had a bad receiving corps. There's a reason they drafted Jordyn Tyson in the first round, and with that pick, a weakness became an exciting bunch. The top three in the room of Tyson, Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele gives Kellen Moore more flexibility and Tyler Shough a legit trio to throw to in 2026.
For all of the talk about building around Shough, the one thing they didn't invest in was wide receiver. The Saints would have had to pay a pretty penny to accomplish that in free agency. That isn't a smart usage of assets with Olave's extension coming up shortly. This is a much better financial move.
The receiving corps felt like they were one injury away from bare cupboards again. This erases that feeling even if questions about health won't go away.
Jordyn Tyson upgrades the top of the Saints receiving corps and creates true depth
Vele was on the team all season, but didn't truly become a factor until the Saints dealt Shaheed to the Seahawks and cut Brandin Cooks. Once he became a focal point though, Vele put good film on the table. He was a big bodied, over the middle threat the team needed. More than that, he was a player Shough relied on in important moments.
It's one of the reasons I rebuked the idea of it just being Olave and some guys in the room. Vele at least deserved to be a part of that conversation. I really like Vele as WR2 but love him as WR3. The problem with the Saints receiving corps is success of it was too reliant on Ja'Lynn Polk rising to the occasion.
The room felt like two and a possible, and you'd like to feel confident about your top three. Even Vele has to prove whether the end of the season was just a flash in the pan. As a rookie, Tyson naturally comes with a set of questions. Being a rookie also provides natural optimism.
The addition of Tyson pushes Polk to fourth in the pecking order. That puts a cap on his statistical contribution, but the fourth receiver can still be a contributor in an offense. If Polk is who the Saints believe him to be, they now have depth in case of injuries. You also have a strong rotation of players when everyone is healthy.
Obviously, fans feel great about Tyson and Olave. That creates a new ceiling at receiver. Pushing Polk to fourth makes the depth as equally impressive as the top of the unit.
