The New Orleans Saints are entering training camp in a couple of weeks, meaning that pivotal position battles will be ongoing. As a fan, it can be tough to identify some of these fights. So, to help with that, here are the three biggest ones fans should look out for.
Contrary to prior years, there aren’t many starting position battles. There’s nothing to the storyline of Jameis Winston vs. Taysom Hill. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t crucial matchups. These battles will help decide some pivotal depth spots and will play a major role in the Saints’ season.
With that said, it’s time to get into the three biggest position battles for the Saints heading into training camp.
The running backs will be under a microscope in training camp.
RB3
Travis Etienne Jr. and Alvin Kamara have the top two spots locked up, but the battle for the third running back three is wide open. On the surface, this may not seem like a huge storyline. However, the Saints have been decimated by injuries and they have frequently used three backs. Additionally, they are fighting for the last “guaranteed” roster spot, as three will definitely make the roster, with the fourth up to Kellen Moore.
This battle is largely between Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, and Audric Estime. All three of these players have their strengths, with Miller being the explosive threat, Neal being the well-rounded product, and Estime being pure power. So, the coaching staff will have a hassle deciding who will get the nod. It’s going to be an interesting and tight battle to follow throughout training camp.
Interior defensive line
Similar to running back, there are a handful of options vying for this role. The only one with a definitive spot is Bryan Bresee. Obviously, they will rotate depending on the situation. But Brandon Staley is still looking for Bresee’s primary running mate. The main contenders are Christen Miller, Vernon Broughton, and Nathan Shepherd. Each of these players can provide value as both a pass rusher and a run defender. Ultimately, the deciding factor will likely be which one is the most consistent.
Kicker
There’s a “kicking competition” every offseason, with one undrafted free agent being matched up against the predetermined starter. However, that’s not the deal this year. There’s a real battle happening between Charlie Smyth and former UFL kicker Tanner Brown. Each has booming legs, but has dealt with inconsistencies. As a result, this matchup will likely be decided within the 25-45 yard range, kicks that must be made. Whichever prospect makes more will likely claim this role and be the week-one starter.
