Pro Football Focus analyst Bradley Locker ranked all 32 NFL teams best and worst 2025 free agent signing. Former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Brandin comes in as the squads worst signing of the offseason, after returning for a second stint with the team.
The ranking reflected how his anticipated veteran impact never translated into meaningful production during his brief return. It served as a reminder that even familiar faces aren’t guaranteed to deliver the second time around.
“The former Saint came back to New Orleans on a two-year deal worth $13 million, but he totaled a 54.9 PFF receiving grade with a measly 0.58 yards per route run over the first 10 games. Subsequently, the team waived him, and he spent the rest of the year with the Bills. Having to cut ties with a player in whom you invested that type of contract definitely isn’t what teams desire.”
Brandin Cooks-Saints reunion didn't return doesn’t pan out
The Saints brought Cooks in to be a steady veteran presence alongside Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. The hope was that Cooks' experience would add balance and reliability to the passing attack. Unfortunately, the fit never fully materialized, and he wasn’t able to make the consistent impact the team envisioned. His play left the receiving corps search for answers throughout the season.
Due to his lack of production, the Saints ultimately had little choice but to release him in November. He finished his brief stint with the team appearing in 10 games, totaling 25 receptions for 165 yards. His most productive outing came in a week 2 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers where he recorded 2 catches for 26 yards.
Although the signing ultimately proved to be a disappointment, it became a blessing in disguise. The Saints offense began to find its footing afterward, building real momentum that carried the team through a strong finish to the season. Cooks departure forced Devaughn Vele into a bigger role. Vele and Shough formed a quick relationship. That connection gave much more hope for the future than Cooks could have ever generated.
