On Tuesday, the New Orleans Saints signed cornerback Michael Davis, while waiving running back Velus Jones Jr. They also signed wide receiver Ronnie Bell and tight end Moliki Matavao to the practice squad.
Michael Davis has been in the National Football League since 2017, when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers. For Davis, it's a reunion with both Brandon Staley and Kellen Moore, as his last year in LA was also theirs.
Following the 2023 season, Davis would switch clubs for the first time, heading to D.C. to play with the Commanders after he and the Chargers failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension. In the Burgundy and Gold, he would only start two games and would be deactivated for all three of their games in the playoffs.
Michael Davis gives the Saints cornerback depth after Isaac Yiadom's injury
So far through his first eight seasons in the NFL, Michael Davis has played in 122 games, gathering 363 tackles, 70 passes defended, and eight interceptions. Davis, who stands at 6'2'' and weighs 196 lbs, was most likely signed due to cornerback Isaac Yiadom suffering a hamstring injury in practice last week.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore called Davis an awesome player and an awesome person. "He can do a lot of different things from a defensive and a special teams perspective," Moore said to the media. "We felt like adding a corner would provide us tremendous depth there. When Ike is available and ready to go, we'll be fired up to have him back and get him back in his roles and opportunities, but I think Mike provides us great depth in that group. That corner group is getting better and better."
Currently, at the time of writing this, there is no clear timeline for when Yiadom is expected to come back. The last update on him was that he was a DNP in Wednesday's practice. So expect to see some Michael Davis action over the next week or so while Yiadom recovers.
