The New Orleans Saints have invested too much into the wide receiver room to take Bleacher Report analyst Moe Moton’s advice to reunite Keenan Allen with Saints head coach Kellen Moore. Allen would lift the floor of the room at the risk of disrupting the youth movement they’re building.Â
Moton listed the Saints as the perfect fit for the free agent. Taking a look back at Allen’s one year with Moore in Los Angeles, he may not be wrong. Allen had over 1200 yards in Moore’s offense. The Saints might be a perfect fit for Allen, but Allen isn’t the perfect fit for the Saints mainly because the Saints don’t need a receiver.
Ironically, this is the exact move the Saints should have made last year. It’s a move I’ve advocated for in the past. Allen would naturally be a veteran in a young room, but Olave is going into Year 5. He’s simultaneously a veteran and youth, so you don’t need Allen to fulfill the vet role.Â
Passing on Keenan Allen is a testament of what the Saints have built
There is no point in the last decade, aside from 2022 when the Saints built a strong receiving corps that was abruptly halted by injuries, that turning down Keenan Allen would even be an option in June. The reunion with Moore would honestly just be a cherry on top.
Sure, Keenan Allen isn’t what he used to be. That’s fine. At 34 years old, you aren’t supposed to be. Allen’s 777 receiving yards for the Chargers last year shows he still has enough left in the tank to be useful. The Saints just don’t need it.Â
The Saints picked up Jordyn Tyson in the top-10. DeVaughn Vele has the potential to a part of the long term vision. Pairing those two with Olave and you have a strong top three in the rotation. Along with them, Barion Brown, Bryce Lance, Ja’Lynn Polk and Trey Palmer will make up the final 2-3 roster spots at the position.Â
Bringing in Allen feels misguided for a team clearly building to the future. The Saints could reasonably have the same core receivers for the next 4 or so years. 2026 will be vital in some players proving they deserve to be a part of that core.Â
Olave, Tyson, Lance and Brown are either proven or have time. Vele, Polk and Palmer would have the most to lose because they have the most to prove this year. Bringing in Allen would only potentially push them down the pecking order and stall some of the evaluations.Â
Vele in particular is a player the Saints need to know whether or not he can be their third best receiver. They’re also likely planning to find it out. Pursuing Allen feels both unnecessary and unlikely.Â
