The New Orleans Saints have a massive need at guard. Mekhi Becton won't be at the top of the list. He's more of a budget option after flaming out with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025. However, Becton should be seen as a real option for no reason other Becton overlapped with Kellen Moore with the Philadelphia Eagles
Moore and Becton both spent a year with the Eagles before moving on for what they believed to be greener pastures. Moore appears to have found those greener pastures in New Orleans. Becton didn't find such luck out west. A reunion could be exactly what Becton needs.
Moore rejuvenated Becton's career once already in Philadelphia. Becton was released by the Chargers, so he doesn't need to abide by the legal tampering rules. He could sign today, but the Saints will likely, and smartly, play the field first. Just because a reunion is what's best for Becton doesn't mean it's what's best for the Saints.
Mekhi Becton makes sense for the Saints... but he also doesn't
The big fear about Mekhi Becton is he was a product of his environment. He spent time with the Jets that didn't pan out. After the Eagles, Becton spent the following season with the Chargers. That once again was a season that didn't pan out. The question naturally arises if Becton's one year in Philadelphia was an one off.
When it comes to the Saints, that concern is typically mitigated by Becton's history with Kellen Moore. It's the natural connection between the parties, and it's also the biggest vote of confidence for Becton turning it around again. Maybe Moore is the coach who knows how to maximize Becton's skill set. It was in Moore's offense that Becton made the move to guard.
The problems come when you look at the notable differences between the situation Becton had in Philadelphia and the one he would join in New Orleans. Becton would have to flip back over to the left side of the offensive line after finding success at right guard.
The biggest difference is who Becton is playing with along the offensive line. Moore's offense surely helped, but playing between 2 future Hall of Famers in Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson certainly had it's perks. Life is easier when you're playing between those two guys. Becton will be sandwiched between quality players, but it isn't Kelce and Johnson.
It's worth kicking the tires on Becton, but it's far from a slam dunk. There's just as many reasons for hesitation as there is reasons for belief, maybe even more.
