Yago Antunes of Clutch Sports listed the New Orleans Saints as one of four teams that would fit Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. "Roster logic" aside, the selection would be a waste of a draft pick for Black and Gold.
Antunes said it's a good fit because the Saints are one of the few teams that treat their offensive structure like a religion. "That environment is friendly to Simpson. Alabama asked him to operate with discipline, and his best stretches looked like a quarterback who was comfortable playing on script, then taking the occasional shot when the defense finally overcommitted. In New Orleans, that style doesn’t get mocked."
Simpson completed 64.5% of his passes for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions last season en route to a second-team All-SEC nomination. A quality player, the Saints just have his position low on their list of needs. Currently, Simpson projects as a late first-round to second-round pick this April. It would better suit both parties if he wasn't selected by the Saints. New Orleans could draft a player in a position of need, and Simpson could potentially start somewhere else.
The Saints don't need to draft a quarterback in the draft this year
Quarterback isn't a position of need for the Saints this offseason, thanks to Tyler Shough. They also have a quality backup in Spencer Rattler, who is still on his own rookie contract. There's really no reason to add on to that right now, especially given the more pressing needs on the team.
When looking at the list of needs, quarterback might be dead last. Nearly every position on the team should be in front of it because the Saints found their guy last year. If a QB is taken, Ty Simpson or not, it would be a head scratcher.
It gets even stranger when factoring in the Saints would have to spend a premium pick on Simpson. It doesn't make sense for a team with a young quarterback at starter. The other three teams were the Jets, Browns and Steelers. The only one with a potential answer at quarterback is the Browns, and it isn't a slam dunk. There will be a quarterback competition in the Cleveland's training camp. The same can't be said for the Saints.
New Orleans is solid at quarterback. That selection could go to one of those more pressing needs. For instance, the Saints could draft someone who can come off the edge. Wide receiver is also a position of need for the team, given its questionable depth at the moment. The Saints' inclusion on the list was questionable on many fronts, and they all center around the Saints being clearly removed from the quarterback market.
