The New Orleans Saints had a few veterans watching the draft closely over these last 3 days. Everyone wants to know if their team is bringing in a rookie to come take their spot. In Cesar Ruiz's case, the answer was yes. For Alvin Kamara and Cam Jordan, the answer is no.
All three of the veterans went into the draft with the same question. Walking out of the draft, the message was clear to all three of them.
The Saints once again chose not to trade up, and the draft looks good for the second year in a row on paper. Most fans would agree with the message the picks sent to the veterans as well. Let's just say fans would've chosen to send those same messages.
Saints put one starter on the clock and cleared the way for a pair of legends to return
RB Alvin Kamara
Kellen Moore has constantly assured that they view Alvin Kamara as a part of this team. The Saints didn't draft a running back at any point, and they had chances. Instead of drafting a young running back, the Saints bolstered other positions. This can't be seen as anything other than a message to Kamara. The Saints view the pairing of him and Travis Etienne as heart of the running game.
RG Cesar Ruiz
After the season, Cesar Ruiz was the only player Mickey Loomis called out in his end of season press conference. The Saints followed that up in the draft by drafting Jeremiah Wright in the fourth round. Actions speak louder than words, and both are saying the team is dissatisfied by Ruiz's performance last year.
The addition of Wright not only proves that but puts Ruiz face to face with his successor. It wouldn't be surprising to see Wright come in and compete for the job during training camp. It feels like, at the worst, 2027 will be Wright's year to start.
EDGE Cam Jordan
The Saints edge rusher room may be the only room in the building with a "NEED HELP" sign hanging up. It was viewed as one of the biggest positions of need coming into the draft, and they didn't draft one. The one move the Saints made in this department was trading a fifth round pick for Tyree Wilson and a seventh round pick.
If the Saints weren't sending this message with their lack of activity, I'll do it. "Come home, Cam. We saved a spot for you." The Saints need Jordan back on the roster and hope he has a similar impact to last year. With the Saints not adding any high profile talent at the position, Jordan should be open to returning too.
