The New Orleans Saints wrapped up their preseason with a 1-1-1 record. The coaches will evaluate film and discuss their roster spots and rotations for the upcoming season. There were several Saints individuals who performed at a high level throughout the preseason, but Saints safety Jonas Sanker stands out like a sore thumb, after an impressive preseason stretch.
Sanker's performances have generated a lot of buzz from the coaches and fans around Saints nation. The emergence of the young safety could possibly come sooner than projected.
The highlight of Sanker's preseason, and arguably the team's preseason, was his interception at the end of the Jaguars game. We can debate if he got out of bounds in enough time, but that play is Sanker's first true highlight. He was way more than just that one play, however.
Saints rookie is ready for an immediate key role
Sanker was nothing short of impressive during the preseason, with strong performances in all 3 games. He left a strong impression on the coaching staff. He was considered a standout player by head coach Kellen Moore, who had high remarks about him. Sanker showcased his versatility in the run game and also in pass coverage.
Sanker’s high level performances in the preseason earned him the highest grade for Saints defender at 81.3. He finished with 15 tackles, 2 break ups, and a game sealing interception in their second match versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After a fantastic preseason display, Sanker has confirmed the excitement that surrounded him during his draft selection. He proved that is well prepared to play a key role and contribute instantly as a rookie.
Saints hope their preseason MVP can carry the momentum into the regular season
Sanker possesd so many wonderful traits during his collegiate career. The Saints fell in love with his tackling, pass coverage, and overall versatility. He also excelled as a great leader for the Cavaliers defense, these traits attracted the Saints, leading him to be selected l with the 93rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
He spent 4 seasons at the University of Virginia where he had an outstanding junior and senior campaign, earning First-Team All ACC nods in consecutive seasons. The expectation is for him to develop early on, in hopes of him becoming a longterm starter for the franchise in the future. So far, it looks like the Saints have hit a slam dunk with their young draft pick.
Things have trended in the right direction. We could possibly see him develop faster than expected, as he could see a larger role very soon. There is great optimism that he can carry his preseason production over into the regular season.
