Saints receive a harsh reality check on Tyler Shough, quarterback room

The New Orleans Saints have one of the worst quarterback rooms in the NFL, per Fansided's Christopher Kline. Though the list didn't account for Zach Wilson, it's hard to imagine him swinging the ranking much. With how hype Saints fans are around Tyler Shough going into the year, this feels like a reality check of sorts. The room of Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Wilson isn't seen as a top unit.

Kline ranked the Saints as the 23rd best quarterback room in the league, and large amount of these rankings are based on starting quarterback. Shough has yet to play an entire season worth of starts, so it's hard to expect the ranking to reflect the optimism.

"Tyler Shough will need to prove his mettle over an entire season, but the early returns in 2025 were extremely promising. Shough is already 26, so he won't receive the same grace period as other second-year QBs. It won't matter if he's productive, though. Kellen Moore is a sharp playcaller who knows how to balance an offense. Spencer Rattler was also quite effective in his starts last season, despite the losing context. New Orleans can probably get a nifty return for him on the trade front, but keeping Rattler as a quality backup and contingency plan is not a bad idea."

Tyler Shough, Saints ranking among the NFC South is the silver lining

There is a silver lining in the rankings, however. The Saints may be bottom 10 in the league, but they're second in the NFC South. The Falcons and Panthers both find themselves lower than the Saints.

The Saints are in a place where winning the division feels realistic, and the ranking only confirmed it. Whether advertently or inadvertently, Kline's rankings place Shough as the second best quarterback in the NFC South behind Baker Mayfield. This is a quarterback driven league, so that stance should immediately put the Saints into play for a divisional crown.

There's just two questions. Can the Saints surround Shough with enough talent and will he continue his momentum from his rookie year? The NFC South has been such a close division that if the answer to either of those questions is yes, the Saints are bonafide contenders for the divisional crown.
