Tyler Shough didn't make his first start for the New Orleans Saints last year until week nine. Even so, he's still on the verge of joining some unlikely company in the team's all-time passing yards list.
While it's great for Shough that he's almost at another threshold, it shines a light on some ugly team history. Entering their 60th season, they've only had a handful, if even that many, of elite NFL quarterbacks. A washed Ken Stabler, a former top supplemental draft pick in Dave Wilson, and even Derek Carr have made the list.
Shough isn't expected to challenge franchise legends Drew Brees, Archie manning, and Aaron Brooks, who lead the team in that category all-time. However, the young quarterback could pass Stabler, an NFL Hall of Famer, if he plays his cards right. To pass him for the tenth spot all-time, Shough needs just 1,286 passing yards in 2026.
Saints QB Tyler Shough might make the franchise's top-10 list sooner than anybody expected
Through his nine starts last season, Tyler Shough averaged 250 passing yards a game. If he keeps that up, then he should be able to clear the Snake no problem in year two.
In fact, at that pace, he should also be able to pass Steve Walsh, who sits at the ninth spot. All of this is set to take place before the Paris game, when the Saints face the New York Giants in New Jersey in Week 6. It honestly sounds pretty remarkable. How many quarterbacks in the league have an opportunity as great as Shough's to enter a franchise's top 10 in any category?
Frankly, every quarterback that the Saints have had since the 1990s. It's some ugly quarterback history the team has if you look back far enough. But something seems different with Shough. It already seems like they have something in him, but if he actually manages to pass Stabler and Walsh, then he'll erase any doubt about it.
A year with the team, Shough has shown on the field how committed he is to the city and the team. Next season was already shaping up to be exciting, and now he knows how to double up on all the hype.
