The New Orleans Saints’ offseason has been headlined by adding explosive playmakers on offense. The additions of Travis Etienne Jr. and Jordyn Tyson have rightfully been praised but are making one player severely underrated ahead of 2026: Juwan Johnson. The veteran tight end can establish himself as a reliable playmaker for Tyler Shough and elevate the Saints’ offense.
Johnson had an impressive 2025 campaign. He was the team’s second leading receiver with 889 yards and three touchdowns. His chemistry with Shough was obvious and a key reason the Saints’ offense thrived down the stretch. In the final three games, Johnson had 15 receptions for 245 yards. This connection is expected to continue growing with an entire offseason between them.
The main issue with Johnson is his consistency. At times, the former receiver converted to tight end is spectacular, showing off his impressive catch radius. However, he has far too many drops, especially when he’s the primary target. He struggles with contact, particularly when he’s the first read on the play and has to react quickly. Luckily for him, this problem will be alleviated with the Saints’ offseason acquisitions.
The weight of the Saints’ offense will be taken off Juwan Johnson’s shoulders.
In recent years, the receiving options were either ransacked with injuries or simply didn’t have enough talent. Johnson found himself thrusted to the top of the totem pole, but he delivered last years in ways he hadn't previously. After adding Tyson, Etienne, Oscar Delp, and Bryce Lance, this won’t be an issue. Johnson can focus on being a matchup nightmare for defenses with his rare combination of size and agility.
As a result, Johnson’s targets may decrease, but his efficiency will skyrocket. He will be a consistent option for Shough between the hashes and can create a big play after the catch. His role can’t be understated, and Johnson’s performance will have a major impact on the unit's success.
Don’t be surprised to hear Juwan Johnson’s name frequently during the season, despite the capital the Saints spent on other playmakers. He can play a key role in their offense and elevate them to a playoff spot.
