Tyler Shough had his best day of training camp on Monday, and that's all New Orleans Saints fans have been waiting for. He showed his knack for moving the pocket, extending the play and keeping his eyes down the field on a pass to Travis Etienne Jr.
While that play showed Shough's ability to make something happen, it was also a good representation of how Etienne can be used in the passing game. He made the reception nearly 20 yards down the field. This wasn't a dump off and run after the catch, which is fine, however the running back being an effective receiver downfield adds a different dynamic.
Barion Brown also made a standout play with the second unit that was one of the offense's best moves. It was Shough going 11-of-14 on the day that was the biggest standout, because of the anticipation behind it.
Saints offense finally gave fans what they've been waiting for
It's not abnormal for defenses to be a little ahead of offenses early in camp. When you put as much into the offense as the Saints did in the offseason, however, it can put a little anxiety behind the process.
Fans were excited about the addition of players like Jordyn Tyson and Etienne, so when camp rolls around, naturally that excitement turns into anticipation to see the players justify the excitement. While there had been some moments by individuals, it had been primarily the defense winning the day as a unit.
It didn't even take a week before the offense won a day, but "finally" still feels like an appropriate description for the amount of time it took. In the first day of padded practices, the offense was firing on all cylinders and got their first true win of training camp.
There's going to be plenty of ups and downs, and the defense is going to win another day, and soon. Still, the Saints put so much into their offense during the offseason that it's natural for fans to want to see it all fall into place for a practice, even if it means nothing but a bread crumb of encouragement that the Saints' offseason moves will work out
