The injury bug strikes again as New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee reportedly suffered a torn ACL on the first day of training camp. Obviously, this is crushing news, but it opens up an opportunity for Vernon Broughton to be an impactful player early in his career. The starting defensive line was Nathan Shepherd, Davon Godchaux and Broughton for every snap at Thursday's practice.
Bresee, the former first-round pick, has been a productive player for the Saints, totalling 14.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, and 86 tackles. He was poised for a breakout season with his electric pass rush and vastly improved run defense. Now, that must wait until 2026 as his feared torn ACL will end his season.
After this injury, the Saints must quickly find a replacement. Fortunately for them, they already have an in-house option with the second-year defensive tackle. Vernon Broughton already had expectations as he comes back from injury, and this just increased the urgency around meeting those expectations.

Although Bresee was the more anticipated prospect, both he and Broughton have similar skill sets. As a result, the second-year player will be asked to fill Bresee’s role and be the explosive, third-down defensive tackle. Broughton is capable of this with his elite athleticism and blazing first step that help him penetrate the backfield and create instant pressure on the quarterback.
Broughton must do this consistently as the Saints don’t have another player of this archetype. Second-round pick Christen Miller is a fantastic player, but is still a raw pass rusher and is more impactful as a run defender. Beyond them, there are some enticing nose tackle options, Zxavian Harris and Davon Godchaux, but each will play a different role.
Bresee was going to be important in this defense reaching its ceiling, and now that responsibility falls to Broughton. He must step up and provide consistent pressure to the quarterback after Bryan Bresee’s injury. It’s a tall task, but Broughton has ample talent to do it. His performance will directly impact not only the defense's success, but also the Saints’ record.
