Caleb Williams was announced as the cover athlete for Madden 27 on Wednesday. The last time the New Orleans Saints had a player who graced the cover of Madden was Drew Brees. That was 16 years ago. If there was anyone on the Saints’ current roster who could break that drought it’s Tyler Shough or Jordyn Tyson.

Shough obviously has the advantage as a quarterback, but it’s also a disadvantage for him. It places him on a pedestal in conversation. When looking to his peers, gracing the cover could be a difficult ceiling to break through.

There’s many elite quarterbacks ahead of Shough right now, and many of them have years of relevance under their belt. Joe Burrow hasn’t been a cover athlete yet. There’s other young quarterbacks he’ll have to compete with as well, like Jayden Daniels. Williams is a first overall pick who came into the league with a lot of buzz. Shough not having that also creates an uphill battle for him with more obstacles.

Jordyn Tyson electrifying style could make him Saints' next Madden cover athlete

Tyson has the same challenges that Shough has in relation to his peers. An added challenge is the cover featured 4 receivers in the 2010s, but none before or after. One thing he has on his side that Shough doesn’t is style of play.

Shough is an exciting young player who’s also mobile, but he doesn’t make video game-esque plays. While that means nothing for the success or quality of the player, it does have an impact on cover athletes. It’s been a constant in recent years. There’s exceptions like Tom Brady, but it’s Brady.

Tyson has exciting written all over him. The same can be said in comparison to his running mate, Chris Olave. Olave has been a very productive, however, Tyson is a more electric player than Olave has shown to be early in his career.

When looking at the landscape of the roster, it’s difficult to predict anyone makes it to the cover soon. Shough and Tyson are the most likely candidates. Each has major hurdles to overcome. It's Tyson's style and draft position make him a player to watch
