The New Orleans Saints’ 2026 schedule was released on Thursday afternoon. While they have multiple enticing matchups, their season opener against the Detroit Lions stands out as a difficult test, particularly for their defense. Brandon Staley’s group will be thrown into the fire against a talented and impressive unit under Dan Campbell.
The Lions ranked fifth in the NFL with an average of 373.2 yards per game. They have a rare mix of an elite rushing attack led by Jamyr Gibbs and an explosive passing game with Jared Goff at the helm. The Saints will have to deal with talented players at each level, ranging from Penei Sewell on the offensive line to Amon-Ra St. Brown at wide receiver.
This danger is exponentially greater because the Saints didn’t invest heavily on defense this offseason. The Saints’ only splash moves for Staley’s group were signing Kaden Elliss and drafting Christen Miller. Outside of them, they focused primarily on offense. This wasn’t a bad move whatsoever, but it will leave the defense vulnerable, especially during the start of the year.
Fans can’t overreact to this game, but it’s a major test early for the Saints and can set the tone for the year.
Fans shouldn’t overreact if the Saints’ defense struggles in this game. It’s a young group that has lost key contributors (Demario Davis, Alontae Taylor and possibly Cam Jordan). This will take time to recover from and could cause issues early in the season.
If things go well however, the Saints could set the tone for the year with an impressive showing. Their young players will be on full display and a successful showing could put them on the path to an exceptional season. They must find confidence and play with an attitude, which was prevalent in certain games last season. It’s pivotal that they find this early and establish a new culture.
The headline of the Saints’ week one matchup against the Lions won’t be about Brandon Staley’s defense, but it’s arguably the most important battle of the game. The Saints’ young unit impressing would set them on a successful course for the rest of the season.
