After a frenetic two weeks, free agency has slowed down for the NFL. However, there are still quite a few talented players available, that should make immediate differences for whoever they ultimately sign with. Some of those guys could sign with the New Orleans Saints, who’s been clearing out cap space as it tries to quickly build a better roster.
The Saints have already re-signed important veterans Chase Young and Juwan Johnson, and also landed a big signing in safety Justin Reid. New Orleans did pursue Charvarius Ward, but were outbid by the Indianapolis Colts. While the team didn’t land him, the attempt shows the Saints are being somewhat aggressive in its attempt to improve.
That means more signings should be on the horizon, and fortunately, there are still some really good players available. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently looked at some of those players, and named the best team fits for them. Of the 13 players on the list, New Orleans was named the perfect landing spot for one: guard Teven Jenkins.
ESPN considers the Saints an ideal landing spot for free agent guard Teven Jenkins
Jenkins is coming off of four years with the Chicago Bears. He was drafted to Chicago in 2021 as a tackle, but eventually moved inside to guard. In his four seasons, he played 45 total games, starting 38. Although Jenkins has struggled with inconsistent play at times and injuries, Barnwell argues that he’d still be a great pick up for teams in need of offensive line help.
"Offensive coordinators are desperate for competent offensive linemen, and Jenkins ranked 33rd in pass block win rate and 44th in run block win rate among guards last season. He stayed healthy for a career-high 14 games and committed only four penalties. At 27, he will be in the prime of his career over the next few years, and there are going to be teams that believe the 6-foot-6 lineman will benefit from getting out of Chicago and away from a dysfunctional offense."Bill Barnwell (ESPN)
The Saints are definitely a team that needs help on the offensive line, especially at left guard. Jenkins could slide right into the starting lineup and provide immediate help, while also being young enough to stay around in New Orleans for many years. He should definitely be one of the names atop the Saints’ target list.
