Going into the fourth round of the NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints still haven't added a cornerback. Walking into the season with Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley starting on the outside is a good start, but the position is noticeably thin behind the starters. Charles Demmings is a prospect who can provide you good depth and possibly climb the depth chart in a room that has the potential to look very different very soon.
FCS Football Central's Gerald Huggins labeled the Saints as one of best schematic fits for Demmings. "Pattern-match defenses will allow him to use his solid mix of man and zone coverage while protecting him from being in too many isolated situations against quality separators," Huggins wrote.
Huggins described Demmings as a "boundary corner with flexibility in coverage, quality press-coverage ability, and strong zone instincts." When looking at the traits and the natural fit in Brandon Staley's defense, Demmings would be a solid pickup as Day 3 progresses.
Saints need to add bodies to the cornerback room and fast
We saw how this went with the receiver room. Granted, the depletion of the room was largely self inflicted. They traded Rashid Shaheed and cut Brandin Cooks. Once that happened, injuries began to strike. Tyler Shough was throwing to players who weren't on the main roster halfway through the year. That's the worst nightmare for the Saints cornerback room, and it's not that far away.
There's some notable names left on the board for Day 3. Jermod McCoy is still lingering due to medical concerns. You assume a team will eventually get to a point where they gamble on his immense talent, but it's hard to predict when the gamble will occur. Keith Abney is another one of the outside corners who's available.
These are players who will likely hear their name called before Demmings. The Stephen F. Austin product is a prospect who should hear his name called a little later in Day 3, but that gives him the room to develop. He's still a work in progress, but the tools are there to provide quality depth early.
The Saints don't seem eager to make a splash here, and they don't need to be. However, they do need to do something. The room is too thin as currently constructed.
