The Saints running back room has lots of potential, however, outside of Alvin Kamara, they are unproven. Recently, the entire rushing attack has been through Kamara. This trend can’t continue as he is now 29 years old.
The Saints need someone to step up to take some pressure off of him. It’s necessary they avoid their worst case scenario of Kamara bearing the weight of the entire running game. In addition to aging, Kamara has also dealt with injuries recently. Getting reliable production from another running back will lessen the wear and tear on their stars.
Some of Kamara’s most efficient and best seasons came when he was paired with Mark Ingram or Latavius Murray. The Saints need to find someone to fill that role, luckily they have some options on the roster.
The offense can't become one dimensional
Kamara has carried the rushing attack by himself, but the running game would be maximized with a two headed monster. The offense could become one dimensional if no one steps up as the second running back. This would severely hinder the Saints offense.
Their inexperience at quarterback makes it necessary to have a strong run game. Defenses being able to key in on the pass will likely cause the offense to become stagnant. The Saints must avoid this at all costs.
It’s necessary that the Saints find a running mate for Alvin Kamara. Luckily for them, they have ample options in the room. Potential must become reality so the Saints can avoid their worst case scenario at running back.
Saints current running back room:
- Kendre Miller
- Devin Neal
- Cam Akers
- Marcus Yarns
- Clyde Edwards Helaire
- Velus Jones Jr.
There is lots of potential in this room. Kendre Miller is easily the biggest name in the room. He's the player with all of the hype. Health has been the issue, however. Miller has shown talent but hasn’t been able to stay on the field.
Devin Neal had amazing production while at Kansas and was a sixth round pick this year. The Saints brought in Cam Akers this offseason who rushed for 444 yards last season. Another sleeper worth mentioning is Marcus Yarns, the undrafted free agent out of Delaware, who had great collegiate tape but needs to adjust to the level of competition.
The Saints have options but someone needs to step up. Kamara likely won’t have a steep drop off but it’s paramount that he stays healthy. He thrives while being a change of pace back. Someone like Devin Neal or Kendre Miller would complement Kamara perfectly and take some of the carries between the tackles.
