The New Orleans Saints do not need to acquire Russell Wilson. The potentially future Hall of Famer is not on the market after being benched by the New York Giants for Jaxon Dart. Under no circumstances, should the Saints pursue Wilson if he does become available.
The Saints and Bengals have emerged as social media's favorite destinations for Wilson, but there have been no indications that the Giants plan on moving on from the quarterback. The Saints would probably answer the call, but that's where it should stop.
For a team with a low 2025 ceiling, acquiring Wilson doesn't make much sense. It becomes even more asinine when you understand you'll likely have to trade for him. The stance remains the same if Wilson is cut and free to grab. This just isn't a move that aligns with where the Saints should be headed.
Russell Wilson doesn't make sense for the Saints in 2025
What does Russell Wilson do for the Saints today? Does he improve quarterback play? Most likely. He had his struggles in New York, but Spencer Rattler hasn't shown he could engage in a shootout with the Dallas Cowboys, and Tyler Shough hasn't seen the field. It would be acceptable to say Wilson would give you better performance at quarterback.
Does he elevate the Saints into being a playoff contender, though? That's the more important question, and the answer is probably not. The Saints are 0-3 and three games behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hopes of winning the division are slipping away, but from a purely isolated perspective, the answer is still no.
The Saints have problems that run deeper than the quarterback. Even if he improves that position, Wilson has not shown he's still at the level to elevate a team. He's failed to do it in his last three spots, so what would make New Orleans the exception?
Additionally, grabbing Wilson flies in the face of building towards the future. Wilson would be a one-year rental. It would have to represent the end of the Spencer Rattler experiment, but it also opens the door for more questions about Shough.
Maybe Wilson represents the veteran mentor for Shough, and the rookie starts in Year 2. It just feels like the Saints are moving towards the future. That's also the reason the Giants put Wilson on the bench.
