Many fans clamored for a reunion with Aaron Glenn during the New Orleans Saints' coaching search this offseason. Ultimately, he "spurned" the Saints, or that's at least how it felt at the moment. The Saints ended up with Kellen Moore, who just recorded his first win. That's something Glenn has yet to do as a head coach.
Following wins from the Saints and the Tennessee Titans, the Jets are now the only winless team remaining in the NFL, falling to 0-5 on the season. The Jets are a complete mess at the moment and the Saints are fortunate they missed out on their top head coach target this offseason. Fortunately for New Orleans, he was hired by the Jets before his scheduled interview with the Saints.
Many Jets fans and analysts across various networks have raised serious questions about the direction and longterm outlook. As their struggles continue, frustration among the fanbase is growing louder each week.
Jets dumpster fire starts with Aaron Glenn
Although the Jets weren’t expected to be a true playoff contender this season, things weren’t expected to be this bad. The level of dysfunction is inexcusable. Coach Glenn inherited a roster that still includes much of the talented core from the previous years, yet the team has somehow regressed across the board.
The Jets have been a complete dumpster fire. They are undisciplined, lack cohesion, and seem to be unprepared week after week. Penalties at the worst times and mental mistakes have been constant. The coaching staff looks lost and they find different ways to implode each week. There’s no identity or visible growth from week to week.
The Jets are constantly shooting themselves in the foot. Through just five games, they’ve racked up a staggering 42 penalties, averaging over eight per game. Their low point came in a week 4 matchup against the Miami Dolphins where they’ve racked committed 13 penalties. It’s one thing to be outplayed but it’s another to beat yourself every week. These self inflicted wounds are a reflection of poor coaching and sloppy execution.
Glenn came in and the wheels fell off
Coach Glenn came in with the reputation as a defensive philosopher, and expectations were that he’d restore the Jets defense to the high standard it held just a few seasons ago. Instead, the defense has completely regressed. Missed tackles, blown coverages, and the inability to get off the field have become routine. The Jets are allowing 31.4 ppg and the first team since 1933 to start a season without a single takeaway through their first five games. It’s clear just how far this defense has fallen.
The Jets are in a really funky coaching situation right now, it’s still early but if no real progress in the upcoming weeks, the organization may be forced to have some uncomfortable conversations about the direction of this staff and future of the team. Meanwhile it’s looking more and more like the Saints dodged a disastrous hire by missing out on Glenn. What’s unfolding in New York has been nothing short of a mess.
