The New Orleans Saints seem ready to run it back with Derek Carr for at least one more season as Kellen Moore makes his arrival, but the expectation is that at some point in the near future, this team will try to find a young quarterback who can guide this team in the future.
With New Orleans already accepting the fact that the Tennessee Titans will use the No. 1 overall pick in this draft on Miami quarterback Cam Ward, the best they can hope for is Colorado standout Shedeur Sanders to slide through the cracks a bit and end up at No. 9 overall.
The biggest obstacle to this dream scenario could be the Cleveland Browns, who are in a position to draft Sanders with the No. 2 overall pick. However, the latest rumors make it seem like the Browns will hand New Orleans a major gift by passing on the former Buffaloes star.
According to Adam Schefter, the Browns are more likely to take Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter at No. 2 overall than anyone else. If that happens, the lack of teams dying for a new quarterback could lead to Sanders falling right into New Orleans' lap with the ninth pick.
Latest Browns rumors could help Saints draft Shedeur Sanders
After signing Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, it seems unlikely that the New York Giants will use their No. 3 pick on a quarterback. The only teams outside of Big Blue who could feasibly draft a quarterback are the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets.
The Raiders seem ready to give Geno Smith an extension, and the Jets appear to be a team that could go all-in on a quarterback next year if the Justin Fields revitalization project doesn't work out. This leaves New Orleans in a fairly advantageous position at No. 9 overall.
Sanders could thrive in Kellen Moore's offense. Not only has Moore been a masterful passing game developer in recent seasons, but the combination of Sanders' impressive accuracy down the field and his high football intelligence could make his transition to the pros a fairly seamless one.
The Saints need to land some wide receivers for Sanders to throw to, and the defensive line is far from fearsome, but it would be quite foolish and a bit unusual for an offensive coach like Moore passing up a golden opportunity to land someone who could start for a decade in New Orleans.
