Mickey Loomis did nothing for settling the future of Alvin Kamara when he told the media the New Orleans Saints are "trying to see how he’s gonna fit on our roster." Saints fans are yearning for clarity on the situation. Loomis couldn't give that to fans now, but he did give a timeline on when a resolution may be reached.
In reading between the lines, Loomis gave light to what the real issue is. The Saints don't need to find how Kamara is going to fit on the roster. That's simple. It may be hard to find, or stomach, his fit in the budget, however. The Saints have already allocated the funds, but they probably want Kamara to take a pay cut, which he is in no way entitled to take. That's the risk of setting up the contract to pay a running back $10 million at 31 years old.
Maybe the Saints would feel comfortable swallowing the pill if Kamara was the top back, but that's what they brought Travis Etienne Jr in for. It's a little more difficult to pay your complementary running back in the double digit millions.
The Alvin Kamara saga could finally come to a close soon
The game of will he or won't he be on the roster be on the roster in 2026 was supposed to be over by now. There's been multiple checkpoints when following Alvin Kamara's future with the team. It all started with the Saints brought in Etienne. When the Saints didn't select a running back in the draft, fans believed it sent a message that Kamara was returning to the team.
Maybe.
Kamara said he is excited to work with Etienne. That was another checkpoint that needed to be crossed. Other than that, there's no real confidence inspiring answers coming from the Saints side. Loomis' latest comment is just one in a series of ambiguous answers.
The game should come to an end soon. Loomis said everything should be resolved in a week or two. Conveniently or purposefully, the two week mark lines up with Kamara potentially being a post June 1 trade. When the situation remained unresolved, it always felt like that was the final checkpoint.
Loomis' words emphasize that. The Saints would save some cap, but it wouldn't be a ton with this move. Still if their mind is made up, it would be a better financial move to do this in June than now. For fans, it would be tough to accept regardless of when it happens.
