It’s hard to say there’s a position with more hype around it than the New Orleans Saints receiving corps. Chris Olave is coming off the best season of his career, and the Saints followed it up by picking Jordyn Tyson in the top 10. While most look at what it means for Tyler Shough, former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert put the pressure on the wide receiver duo.
Of course, the fact that list of new additions doesn't stop at Tyson contributes to analysts and fans focusing on Shough's performance. The Saints drafted three wide receivers and a tight end in the draft after signing Noah Fant in free agency. The natural response after the acquisition period was, "they're surrounding Shough with weapons." What those weapons need to do has been a secondary conversation at best.
Hebert brought that conversation to the forefront. Maybe it's the former quarterback in him. Regardless, it's certainly a discussion worth having. There's expectation around the duo, and Hebert is calling for the All Pro and top-10 pick to rise to the occasion.
Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson hitting their ceiling takes Saints to the next level
Hebert isn't calling Olave and Tyson out because of any skepticism. He knows what each player is capable of. "I think Chris Olave has unbelievable potential and ability, also with Tyson, but can they answer the bell," Hebert questioned.
Hebert concluded his thought with, "you can’t be a flash in the pan. You’ve got to be a lot of flashes. You can’t just like, flash, OK, I showed you what I can do, now I’m going to chill out. No, you’ve got to be able to contribute every day so I can rely upon you." That desire seems aimed directly at Olave coming off a career season.
Though atypical, Hebert is right on the money. The Saints stacked the offense with receiving threats, but Olave and Tyson are the unquestioned top 2 in the room. It'll be on them to carry most of the workload.
Shough has to continue to develop to take advantage of the new weapons, but the weapons also need to step up to help Shough develop. It's a mutualistic relationship. You're looking for Olave to surpass 1000 yards like he does whenever he hasn't missed half the games. Tyson needs to hit the ground running. The Saints will need all of that and a next step from Shough for the unit to hit the next level.
