New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees was one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever lace up the cleats. Throughout his impressive career, Brees set many records, finishing as the leagues all time leader in several major passing categories.
While being widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks the game has ever seen, Brees was surprisingly absent from NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms list of top 10 quarterbacks of all time. He based his rankings on each quarterbacks peak, but Brees’ exclusion drew plenty of criticism, with Saints fans voicing their frustration on social media outlets.
Not only was it frustrating that his name was excluded, but there were several quarterbacks ranking above of him that left many fans scratching their heads. This sparked plenty of debate, leaving fans wondering how one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history was left off the list.
Drew Brees’ biggest obstacle was the era that he played in
During Drew Brees’ peak, he established himself as one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the history of the sport. He won NFL Offensive Player of the Year twice, led the league in passing yards five times, passing touchdowns twice, and put the cherry on top by leading the New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl 44 victory, while earning Super Bowl MVP.
Even with one of the most decorated peaks the league has ever seen, it still wasn’t enough to move Chris Simms. All 10 players on the list share something that Brees does not. Every quarterback included was either named league MVP at some point in their career, or selected to the All Decade team for their era.
Unfortunately for Brees, he played in the same generation with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers, which limited his opportunities to collect those accolades. This appears to have contributed to Chris Simms leaving him off the list completely, in favor of quarterbacks from other generations.
When analyzing quarterbacks strictly on their primes, it’s extremely difficult to argue that there are 10 at the position better than him. His peak stands toe to toe with several names from both older and newer eras, making his omission very surprising for fans across the league.
