The New Orleans Saints went back to back defensive picks in the third round of the 2025 Draft. They began by selecting Texas defensive tackle Vernon Broughton with the 71st-overall pick. Shortly after, they selected Jonas Sanker at pick 93. New defensive coordinator Brandon Staley has clearly defined what he wants for his defensive players, and the Saints are supplying those kind of guys.
Staley has made stopping the run an emphasis. A crucial role in that is having explosive defensive tackles who can penetrate the backfield. The Saints already have Bryan Bresee and Davon Godchaux but they drafted another in Vernon Broughton.
Broughton has a huge frame, standing at 6’4” and weighs over 300 pounds. With his size he naturally generates power. In addition, he pairs that power with rare explosiveness for the size. It wasn’t uncommon for Broughton to beat the offensive lineman off the snap and bring down the rusher for a loss. This skill remains true for rushing the passer— he had four sacks at Texas last year against SEC competition. He will create a dynamic tandem of rushers on the interior with Bryan Bresee.
The Saints also addressed their run defense with their next pick, selecting former Virginia safety Jonas Sanker. In 2024 he had an impressive nine tackles for loss. He is a heat-seeking missile once he spots the ball carrier. Sanker may only be 6’0, but he packs a punch as a hitter.
He is also incredibly versatile on the second level. He played snaps in the box, the slot, and as a free safety. Allowing him to learn under Tyrann Mathieu will aid his development and help him be an impact player for years to come in New Orleans.
Brandon Staley clearly defined what personnel he needed to successfully run his defense. Vernon Broughton and Jonas Sanker will both fit in perfectly in Staley’s scheme.
