One of the New Orleans Saints biggest priorities going into the 2026 offseason was to address the edge rusher position. Going into the offseason, there were uncertainties surrounding whether Cameron Jordan would return, drawing questions about the future of the group and overall depth of the position.

The unknown status of Jordan returning with the squad also made it glaring that the options behind starters Chase Young and Carl Granderson were very limited and needed to be one of the team's top priorities. Although New Orleans finished 10th in sacks last season, there were several occasions where the group struggled to generate pressure on quarterbacks, resulting in extended drives.

While operating with limited resources, the Saints were still able to work their magic this offseason. Through trades and free agency, New Orleans improved their edge rushing unit, turning one of their biggest weaknesses into a potential strength.

New Orleans Saints turn edge rusher weakness into a potential strength

The New Orleans Saints made it a priority to bring back their veteran locker room leader for a 15th season. Jordan is extremely important to this bunch and he put that on full display by recording his first double digit sack season since 2021, while also posting a strong 76.0 PFF grade. His return to the squad will give them leadership, grit, and a presence both as a pass rusher and run stopper.

The Saints also acquired former 2023 first round pick Tyree Wilson and a 2026 7th round pick in exchange for a 2026 5th round selection. It's a low risk high reward scenario for New Orleans, as Wilson was regarded as a high level prospect with high ceiling.

Wilson will now step into a role of as a rotational rusher, where the burden of high level results won't be expected. He will now have luxury of patience from the organization, giving him time and an opportunity to unlock the potential that mad him a top 10 draft pick.

The Saints would continue to add depth at edge rusher by signing former New England Patriot Anfernee Jennings. Jennings gives the defensive front another physical presence as a rotational piece, as he is known for being setting the edge and stopping the run at a solid rate. A position that was once considered a weakness, now has the ability to become a strength. The added talent and roster depth give it more complete unit heading into 2026.
