Saints first round plans could be spoiled by latest NFL Draft report

Trading ahead of the Saints feels like an obvious move for teams

Per Albert Breer, the five teams who pick between 3-7 in the NFL Draft are looking to move down. One of these teams finding a trade partner could push the New Orleans Saints to make a rushed decision or destroy their first round plan altogether.

Trading within the top-10 can be rich, but the Saints haven't been afraid to pay when they've identified their guy. They gave up a first to trade up for Marcus Davenport. They gave up a lump sum to ensure they could get two first round picks to grab Chris Olave and Trevor Penning. Those aren't fond memories, so I'm sorry. They are applicable examples, however, even if they weren't this high in the draft.

Maybe they're cautionary tales as well. Signs that the Saints should sit and wait for the draft to fall to them. If the right guy falls, though, the Saints could throw caution to the wind.

Saints are a prime team to jump ahead of in the NFL Draft

While teams ahead of the Saints wanting to trade down could be the catalyst of the Saints trading up, it could just as easily give teams behind the Saints the opportunity to trade up. In some cases, they could be trading up to

The Saints have a need at a few positions, and they couldn’t be more obvious. Teams know the Saints need an edge rusher, wide receiver and Caleb Downs. The Saints could pick someone else, but those feel like the likeliest desires for them. Having an obvious need puts spotlight on New Orleans as a team to jump ahead of if you want your target.

Rueben Bain is expected to be the third, and final of the Big 3, edge rusher selected. A team could easily think, "we can't let him fall to New Orleans, because he won't make it pass them." The same could be said about Caleb Downs or one of the receivers.

Any team is a threat to go grab Caleb Downs, but the Dallas Cowboys are the most likely option to trade ahead of the Saints. Their two first round picks give them the ammunition to pull it off as well. Bain is another team the Saints could target. Right behind the Saints is the wide receiver and edge rusher-needy Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs could trade right to 7 in order to jump the Saints. It wouldn't be nearly as far of a leap as the Cowboys would have to make, and the Commanders may be willing to drop just two spots. Knowing the Saints similar needs could push the Chiefs to pursue the trade. In some ways, it would be a no brainer.
