Tyler Shough set up a passing retreat for himself and the New Orleans Saints pass catchers in San Diego. The special part about it is he set it up with the help of Drew Brees. When trying to find the best way to go about this endeavor, Shough leaned on the best resource possible.

Shough revealed Brees "was pivotal in setting everything up with the workout facility and the throwing location." Shough is going to pay to fly out teammates to San Diego for the passing retreat. This retreat is a way for the team to get some work in while also escaping the New Orleans heat.

Things like this have been the biggest story for Shough going into Year 2. His leadership has been on full display. Rookie Bryce Lance can't speak to Shough's growth, but it didn't take Lance long to notice Shough's leadership. "Obviously he's a great quarterback, but I think it's [his] leadership. Truly, he makes me want to go make plays for him because of the way he leads and leads our team and our offense as well." Lance said of his quarterback.

Drew Brees to Tyler Shough feels like a delayed passing of the torch

Shough picking up the phone to call Brees and ask for advice isn’t quite passing the torch. It’s been too many years for it to be described that way, but it does have the similar traits of the old guard passing down the tricks of the trade to the new guard.

It’s also the first time it looks like the Saints have a franchise quarterback since the Brees days. Jameis Winston had a hot start and spent time studying under Brees, but his injury derailed any potential franchise quarterback conversations. Derek Carr just never fit the bill.

Shough is young and looks the part of a franchise leader. Getting tips of how to lead the group around him from Brees just feels like right. Brees is still invested in the Saints, and moments like this are great reminders of how he remains a resource.

Brees may have helped Shough set up the even, but there’s a chance he takes it a step further and actually shows up. Shough clarified it would be a brief appearance if at all. “He might be there for a little bit, but I couldn't say for the whole time,” Shough said. That’s still more than expected, and gives Brees an opportunity to build even more of a rapport with Shough and the rest of the offense.
