New Orleans Saints fans may hope the team ends their 5 year playoff drought, but Drew Brees knows they will. When asked if this is the year, Brees didn't straddle the fence. He flat out said, "1000%."
Some will just as quickly throw out homer allegations at Brees for the answer. Looking at the team and the division it's far from far-fetched, and the NFC South is one of the biggest reasons Brees believes this is the year.
Drew Brees isn't wrong about how Tyler Shough performed vs the NFC South
Last season was a close race, with three teams finishing with a 8-9 record. It may not be that tightly contested in this upcoming year, but it is set up to be a competitive race again. In tight races like that, divisional record becomes vital.
Just ask the Carolina Panthers. Sweeping the Falcons is what earned them the tiebreaker in the 3-way logjam. In that light, Brees' point about Shough's performance within the division holds a lot of weight.
"Saints beat the Bucs last year at their place, beat Carolina twice. You know, and so as you as you look at it, it’s it’s pretty wide open," Brees said. While Brees expressed it from a team perspective, it's impossible to ignore all of that happened with Shough starting.
Those being divisional victories was the cherry on top, but those wins were impressive aside from that. Carolina was coming off big victories before losing to the Saints both times. The off schedule plays Shough made with his legs against the Buccaneers felt like a coming out party.
The only division opponent Shough has lost to is the Falcons. Looking at his resume though, he is 3-2 in NFC South competition. Every team was 3-3 last year, so Shough repeating or grabbing a win in his extra opportunity could be exactly what the Saints need to steal the divisional title in a close race.
