The New Orleans Saints rookie class is highlighted by exciting picks like Jordyn Tyson, but Pro Football Focus doesn't believe the class will lead to many more wins. They're actually graded as one of the least impactful rookie classes in the league.
PFF gave the Saints a B for their draft class. That's a solid grade, but the team didn't receive nearly as favorable of an evaluation in PFF's wins above average metric. The Saints' draft class ranked 26th in WAA added. At .733 wins WAA added, the Saints are well below the average mark.
It definitely isn't something you want to hear about a class, but it's not as doom and gloom as you'd think. This isn't an indication that the Saints didn't pull in a good class. WAA is a short term metric for a naturally long term investment. Success of a draft can be felt after a year, but it's never fully determined that quickly.
Saints 2025 draft class takes pressure of incoming rookies.
The Saints draft class released waves of excitement over the fan base. Each of the picks were met by praise, and the momentum building was palpable. Once the draft concluded, the class in totality was received more applause than criticism.Â
The next step after reaction is results. The prospects are exciting, but excitement doesn’t immediately equate to wins. While true, it may not need to right away. It’s important to remember PFF’s metric is based solely on year 1 results.Â
Last year’s draft feels highly impactful, but the team still ended with a top-10 pick. That’s because it’s a process. As last year's draft grows, this year's class will have less pressure on them to be the catalyst for more wins. It's two strong classes on top of each other that'll help the Saints stack wins more so than needing the rookies to jump start the change.
We saw the change with Tyler Shough. His play at the end of the season feels like the starting point for something special. Kelvin Banks Jr. is already displaying traits of a stalwart at left tackle. Jonas Sanker and Quincy Riley quickly moved into the starting lineup and have made plays that get you excited about future ability. If this year's rookies can give you half of that in their first season, it's a massive win for Saints.
If you’re looking for instant impact from Saints rookies, take a look at Jordyn Tyson, Barion Brown and Christen Miller. Those are players who have a strong chance to make an instant impact. The other parts of the draft are filled with guys who may take a year before having obvious and large impacts. Even Miller has room to grow as a pass rusher. That’s the aspect of the defensive line that’s typically correlated to wins.Â
