Atlanta Falcons outside linebacker Jalon Walker suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Tuesday, August 4. This loss has significant ramifications for the New Orleans Saints, as they won’t have to face one of the NFL’s rising stars. Suddenly, the two matchups against the rivals are looking a lot simpler, particularly for Tyler Shough and Kellen Moore’s offense.
The Saints know how this feels. On the first day of training camp, they lost a pivotal part of their defense, Bryan Bresee. Like Bresee, there was going to be a lot on Walker's plate in 2026 prior to his injury.
Walker had a spectacular rookie season last year with 5.5 sacks, 29 pressures, and 36 tackles. He was a pivotal piece in Atlanta’s defense and was expected to take over for Kaden Elliss, who’s now a Saint. Because of this, the Falcons are scrambling after losing their top two off-the-ball, versatile linebackers this offseason
The absence of Jalon Walker makes the Falcons’ defense more predictable for Tyler Shough.
Jalon Walker’s A-list trait is his versatility. He’s an outstanding pass rusher and is equally comfortable defending the run or dropping back into coverage. As a result, a defensive coordinator can use him like a chess piece, deploying him anywhere on the field in a variety of roles. This helps a defense disguise its coverage and keeps an offense guessing until after the snap.
This ability significantly impacts young quarterbacks. Oftentimes, they can get sped up and forced into mistakes after being locked into the pre-snap picture, just for it to change while dropping back. The Falcons can still do this after Walker’s injury, but it won’t be nearly as successful, and they can’t get as creative.
This should relieve Tyler Shough, as the young quarterback was constantly pressured against Atlanta last year, getting sacked nine times in their two matchups. Now, arguably their best pass rusher is taken off the board. Who knows? This injury could be the difference between the Saints winning and losing.
