This season has quickly tumbled downhill for the New Orleans Saints. After starting the year with two dominant wins, the Saints have lost their last five games, all in embarrassing fashion. Between devastating injuries, and the team just playing really bad football, it’s hard to imagine New Orleans turning things around and making something out of the season.

However, going winless for the rest of the season is probably the least of Who Dat Nation’s worries. Saints fans know there’s a reality that’s worse than losing a lot of games, and those fans who’ve been tormented by New Orleans long enough also know the team is headed towards that reality. That reality is stringing wins together once it’s too late.

The reason that’s worse than losing a lot is because it puts teams in the purgatory of being too bad for the playoffs but too good for a high draft pick. In the end, a franchise gets stuck in a cycle of mediocrity, like the Saints have been in recent years.

Saints have a great draft spot entering Week 8 but fans know that won’t last

If the season ended today, New Orleans would have the sixth-overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. With a 2-5 record, the Saints are one of the worst teams in the league, so they’d get to draft as such. While losing is never fun, drafting generational players that can change the fate of a franchise is.

But, the season isn’t ending today, and New Orleans definitely isn’t throwing in the towel. The Saints are still going to compete for a spot in the playoffs, as they should, and they’ll likely win quite a few more games this season. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the team ended the year with around seven wins.

Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be enough to get them in the playoffs, but it would be too many for a top-five draft pick. Every fan base is hoping for one or the other. In recent years, the Saints have specialized in missing out on both.
