Saints are facing worst-case scenario with draft position, despite losing games

The New Orleans Saints have lost a lot of games this season, but they won’t have the draft pick to show for it.

The 2024 season has been an absolute disaster for the New Orleans Saints. The team has seen the majority of its keys players get hurt, witnessed a coach get fired midway through the season, and has lost 10 games after 17 weeks of the season. With just one week left in the regular season, there’s nothing that could save this catastrophe of a year for New Orleans.

To make matters worse, the Saints are currently in the worst-case scenario for a bad NFL team. The team is losing games, in embarrassing fashion, but the team’s projected draft pick for the 2025 Draft isn’t improving.

Currently, with one week remaining in the regular season, New Orleans is projected to have the 10th-overall pick. That would’ve been the case even if the Saints won on Sunday. Unfortunately, New Orleans happened to be a really bad team the same year several other teams have been terrible.

Saints projected to have 10th-overall pick in 2025 Draft

Typically, when it becomes clear a team isn’t going to make the playoffs, fans start thinking about draft position, and hoping their favorite team loses. That’s why Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants fans have been so frustrated recently, because both teams have won games that moved them out of the No. 1 pick.

With five wins, New Orleans has been out of the race for the No. 1 pick, but the team is barely clinging on to a top-10 pick, despite being one of the worst teams in the league this season. After Week 17, there are nine teams with less than five wins, so they’re all set to pick before New Orleans.

As typically is the case with Week 18, a lot will be undecided, and chaos will certainly ensue. Depending on the outcomes of all the games, the Saints could end up higher in the top 10 or could end the year with six wins just like the San Francisco 49ers. At this point, Saints fans would prefer a loss to improve the draft position.
