The New Orleans Saints opened up the week as 15.5 point underdogs to the Buffalo Bills in their week 4 matchup. This line surpasses the largest spread of the season, when the Bills were favored by 11.5 against the New York Jets.
The last time the franchise faced a spread this large dates back to 1985, when they were 16 point underdogs to the San Francisco 49ers. The Saints not only covered the spread, but they pulled off a stunning upset on the road at Candlestick Park, winning 20-17.
This matchup will feature David and Goliath, with the underdog Saints facing a red hot undefeated Bills squad. The Bills are incredibly tough to beat at home, as they are 17-2 since the start of 2023. Both teams are performing on a different level, this line reflects how dominant Buffalo has been and how much the Saints have struggled.
Saints clash with NFL powerhouse
The Saints find themselves still in search of their first victory, as they were obliterated by 31 points in their 44-13 week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Everything seemed to have gone completely wrong. They were plagued by costly mistakes throughout the course of the game, committing 11 penalties for 77 yards, and struggling to find a rhythm on any side of the ball. Special teams miscues, three and outs, and an inability to create momentum played a big role in their lopsided defeat.
The Bills are clicking on all cylinders and remain one of the upper echelon teams in the NFL. They enter week 4 undefeated, showcasing an explosive offense. Josh Allen is in MVP form, the defensive is forcing turnovers, and the momentum has carried over from last seasons 13 win campaign. Buffalo certainly looks like a Super Bowl contender. If they continue at this pace, it will be very difficult for many teams to keep up with them.
Sunday’s game will feature two teams that’s are trending in opposite directions, the Saints will need to play a near perfect game if they want any shot of pulling an upset. Anything is possible, the Saints showed in the first two weeks that they can fight and stay competitive. Now they are looking to prove sport books wrong just as they did in 1985 when they pulled off an upset as 16 point underdogs.
