Brock Rechsteiner was one of LouisianaSports.Net analyst Ross Jackson's three standouts from New Orleans Saints organized team activities. He was a late addition to the roster, signing after a rookie tryout, and he's carried that streak into organized team activities.
Jackson wrote, "The wideout immediately grabs attention with his build. He’s a bulky, strong receiver but one that moves fluidly and can leap with the best of them. He’s been in a consistent rotation throughout first, second and third team reps."
Rechsteiner stood out during rookie minicamps. He's getting run with each of the offensive teams, and his performance will uplift his standing in a crowded receiver room. His size and movement skill make Rechsteiner a player to watch in preseason.
Saints have one massive silver lining to Jordyn Tyson and Chris Olave being held out of practice
It isn't at the point where Tyson and Olave missing practice is concerning. It all seems precautionary at this juncture, so it's worth looking at the benefits of their absences right now. Jackson summed it up perfectly at the end of his Rechsteiner highlight. "He’ll continue to get a lot of opportunities moving ahead while rookie wideout Jordyn Tyson continues to recover."
While Tyson and Olave are out, there are other players who are lower in the depth chart getting more reps with first and second team offense that may not get that opportunity with a fully healthy receiving corps.
It's hard to say Rechsteiner would get reps with the first team if Tyson and Olave were out there. These extra reps catching passes from Shough could come in handy if injuries strike. Rechsteiner feels poised to be a practice squad player, so it may feel like the Saints won't see the benefits of these reps during the season. For one, we saw the toll injuries took on the Saints receiving corps last year. Secondly, it doesn't have to be Rechsteiner. He's just the example.
There's other players who are closer to the roster bubble who may be practice squad players but more likely to get called up sooner who are getting these reps. It's a situation you hope doesn't come up, but there's value in Shough gaining familiarity with these wide receivers. It also gives them a better chance to prove themselves. Play can get sloppy as quarterback play drops, so this provides more snaps to best showcase abilities.
