The New Orleans Saints made a multitude of signings during the opening week of free agency, but still have some major holes on their roster that they must address during the 2026 NFL Draft. Luckily for them, they are in a prime spot to acquire talent at pick number eight.Â
The Saints have addressed multiple weaknesses, particularly at offensive guard, running back, and special teams. However, there are still areas that need improvement. It’s important to note that they can still pick up more free agents, but have yet to do so.
With that said, here are the three biggest positional needs the Saints must in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Saints need to add a wide receiver during the draft
Wide receiver
A point of emphasis for the Saints this offseason was elevating the offense and giving Tyler Shough a full arsenal of playmakers. Thus far, they’ve achieved this by signing Travis Etienne and Noah Fant. However, they still haven’t added a wide receiver to complement Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele.
This is likely intentional as the NFL Draft has an elite wide receiver class. The Saints can choose their archetype of wide receiver at pick eight and have him on a cheaper deal than one of the top free agents. Finding a suitable pass catcher is the final step in creating the perfect offense for Shough to thrive in.
Edge rusher
The Saints still haven’t signed an edge rusher to the surprise of most fans. It was a solid group in 2025, with Chase Young breaking out, Cameron Jordan turning back the clock, and Carl Granderson showing flashes. Unfortunately, Jordan still hasn’t re-signed.
Because of this, finding their future complement to Young is necessary. The top-end talent is prevalent at edge rusher, with Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. leading the pack. He’s an ideal prospect for the Saints at eight and should heavily be considered if he falls to them.Â
Linebacker
The Saints added Kaden Elliss at linebacker, who will be helpful, but losing Demario Davis is brutal and leaves the group needing reinforcements. They have Danny Stutsman, who is expected to take the reins, but he alone can’t anchor the position. Isaiah Stalbird will contribute additionally, but this group shouldn't inspire confidence among Saints fans.
Luckily for them, Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles awaits. He’s the perfect well-rounded player who can replace Davis’ production both on the field, and as a leader off of it. The biggest question around Styles is if he will fall to pick eight. If he does, then the Saints landed the holy grail.
