New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is known for his aggressive style during the NFL Draft, frequently moving up. This is exemplified by the fact that he hasn’t traded back since 2007. However, he can rewrite the stars by trading back in the 2026 NFL Draft. To give fans an idea of what this looks like, here is a seven-round mock draft with a trade down.
In this scenario, the Saints traded back with the Vikings and acquired picks 18, 49 and a 2027 second-round pick. This gives the Saints extra picks in the prime of the draft class, on day-two, and provides them more talent at a variety of positions.
With that set up, it’s time to get into a Saints seven-round mock draft featuring a trade back.
Saints fans don't want to hear it, but drafting an offensive lineman in round one could be smart.
1:18- Vega Ioane, G, Penn State
This isn’t a flashy pick, but it would solidify the Saints’ offensive line. Ioane is a mauler against the run and is sound in pass protection. He hasn’t allowed a sack in two years and has only given up four pressures in 2025. Ioane’s a high-floor prospect with every tool to develop into an All-Pro caliber guard.Â
2:42- Chris Bell, WR, Louisville
Chris Bell is a perfect fit in the second round. The chemistry is evident with Tyler Shough, as the two were teammates at Louisville in 2024. Additionally, Shough has been persuading the front office to draft him. Beyond this, Bell’s run after the catch and middle of the field prowess complements the Saints’ receiver room. They don’t have a receiver with his skillset - Bell could be the missing piece to unlock the true potential of the Saints offense.Â
2:49- D’Angelo Ponds, CB, Indiana
What D’Angelo Ponds lacks in size, he makes up for with his elite technique, athleticism and versatility. The five-foot-nine, 170 pound prospect is among the most talented players in the nation, which is evident on his film. Brandon Staley can implement Ponds on the outside or in the slot - there’s nothing he can’t do. The Saints would be fortunate to draft him with the extra pick they got from the Vikings.
3:73- Kyle Louis, LB, Pitt
The Saints have lacked a pass coverage linebacker in recent years. Luckily for them, Kyle Louis awaits as an enticing option for the role. Similar to Ponds, he’s undersized, but compensates with his unparalleled movement skills. He’s a perfect complement to Danny Stutsman and would give the Saints a young, athletic pairing.
