The Saints lost veteran Demario Davis to the New York Jets this offseason. This is obviously a huge setback as the eight-time captain played a crucial role both on and off the field. However, they have the pieces to replace his production on the roster; the only question is who?
Five-year veteran Pete Werner now headlines the unit with young players like Danny Stutsman, Isaiah Stalbird, and Jaylan Ford beside him. Additionally, they signed Kaden Elliss in free agency, who will play a massive role in Brandon Staley’s defense, just at a slightly different position: off-the-ball, hybrid linebacker, instead of at a more traditional spot.
Pete Werner and Danny Stutsman are the clear top two contenders to replace Demario Davis.
Plenty can change during training camp, but Werner and Stutsman are leading the charge to replace Davis. Werner will likely start as the primary player, as he has ample experience and can help ease the transition. However, Stutsman has a similar skill set to Davis and is likely viewed as the long-term solution because of his dominance against the run, ability to blitz, and high IQ both on and off the field.
Werner and Stutsman are the favorites, but they aren’t the only players capable of seeing the field. Stalbird and Ford have little experience, but both of them are young players who have the potential to develop into impactful pieces. In all likelihood, they will be primarily special teams players, but all it takes is one snap for them to be called into action.
The Saints linebacker room has a lot to prove in 2026, especially since Demario Davis is gone. However, they have the pieces to replace him, particularly in Pete Werner and Danny Stutsman. Strong performances from them two will help shape the Saints’ season and play a defining role in the defense’s success.
