Shedeur Sanders could be setting up to make his first start of the season, with the Cleveland Browns potentially losing Deshaun Watson for the week. When asked if he's seen anything from the New Orleans Saints defense, Sanders declined to answer and even laughed.
"Yeah I seen a lot, when I smile just know that means something. I'm maturing, you know what I'm saying, I'm maturing, I could have gave that a decent answer but now I'm just gonna smile when it's some questions."
Sanders responded to the question like it was a gotcha question, and it isn't even close to one unless you think it's a bad defense. It's typically not a great thing to assume this much, but Sanders left room for that. The Saints should treat it like disrespect.
Saints and Browns fans are probably both mad about how Shedeur Sanders answered this question
It doesn’t get much worse than this. Sanders is about to make his first start of the season, and he’s already sending shots. Now, if you’re a Cleveland fan, you probably don’t like this just as much as the Saints fans don’t like it, just for different reasons.
Sanders labeled his lack of answer as maturation, but this isn’t typically a question that needs maturation. Saying the Saints are a good defense really would’ve been a politically correct and very safe answer. Sanders just chose not to do it.
Technically, he didn’t say anything bad about the Saints, but saying he would not answer the question to not give an answer is giving an answer. If this was the mature route, I’d hate to see the immature route.
Weird media interactions are par for the course for Sanders. As a rookie, he mouthed all of his answers during a media availability. Sanders’ approach screamed that he can’t say what he really feels about the Saints defense, especially with the laugh mixed in.
The team is on their phone every day and has probably seen this video already, but Brandon Staley should have this clip broadcasted to the team in every meeting all week long. This type of disrespect should be bulletin board material ahead of the game.
If Sanders believes the Saints are vulnerable on defense, then let him come prove it. The Saints should take it personal that he said it or didn't say it, and that he felt it with enough conviction to approach his non-answer that way.
Even if it's not how Sanders meant it, that's how the Saints should take it. The same way they continuously mentioned Anthony Weaver calling Tyler Shough a poor man's Josh Allen was used as motivation. This is arguably worse, and the defense should take it personal.
