Cornerbacks are set to test at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine on Friday afternoon. One of the most anticipated prospects is Arizona State’s Keith Abney, whose athleticism and fluidity will be on display during explosive testing and individual drills. He’s an ideal target for the New Orleans Saints to improve the position.
Outside cornerback is an underrated need for the Saints. Kool-Aid McKinstry had an up and down season but ended the year strong and secured himself as the number one option. Quincy Riley showed flashes in his limited opportunities, however, they are still lacking established and consistent options. It could also become a bigger need if Riley slides to the slot to replace Alontae Taylor, if he leaves. This is why it would make sense to invest in cornerback on day one or two.
Abney isn’t the biggest player, and will likely measure in under 6-foot-0 in Indianapolis, but makes up for it with his impressive movement skills. He’s going to run an blazing 40-yard dash, likely in the mid-4.3s. However, this won’t be his best event. Instead, Abney will shine in the team drills where he can show his flexibility and fluidity, particularly when in man coverage.
Keith Abney can continue the Saints’ history of Day 2 DBs
The Saints have had amazing luck with day two defensive backs, which can continue with the selection of Abney. The former Sun Devil is arguably the best man cornerback in the draft and can match up against a variety of receivers. His elite footwork and quickness allows him to effortlessly mirror an opposing pass catcher. If Abney does get targeted, he stays composed, reads his matchups eyes, and comfortably makes a play.
Abney counteracts his small frame with tremendous physicality. He has amazing press technique and disrupts the timing of a receivers route by pushing him off his point. Abney can get handsy in coverage, which does result in penalties from time-to-time, but this is a needed mentality for an undersized player.
Overall, Keith Abney will light up the NFL Combine and should be in consideration for the Saints in April. His impressive mobility, sound technique, and exceptional physicality makes him a top cornerback prospect. Be on the lookout for his name to rise up draft boards in Indianapolis.
