The New York Jets have undergone a major roster shake up, trading two of their defensive stars, Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts and their star defensive tackle Quenin Williams to the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a bold move that will redefine the teams future moving forward.

The Jets have entered a full rebuild, a move that  serves as alarming news for the New Orleans Saints who are competing with New York for the number overall pick.  Both teams sit near the bottom of the NFL standings, each managing just a single win so far this season.

With the season halfway complete, the playoffs are almost out of the question, leaving both teams focused on strong draft positions.  The Jets and Saints both face the challenge of developing players and maintaining competitiveness down the stretch.

The Saints don't have the guts to have gone full Jets at the deadline but they should have

The Saints also made moves at the deadline, dealing Rasheed Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks for 2026 fourth and 6th round picks, and sending offensive tackle Trevor Penning to the Los Angeles Chargers for a 2027 6th round pick.  These moves also illustrate the Saints plans to retool their roster and build torwards the future.

Although the Saints made a couple moves at the deadline, it simply wasn’t enough.  The team is currently among the of worst teams in the NFL,  and with performances declining each week, it’s clear that a full rebuild should’ve been the approach.  Instead of making small adjustments, the Saints should’ve cleaned house, focused on the future, and stacked up valuable draft picks just like the New York Jets did.

The Jets and Saints are set to face off later in the season in a week 16 showdown that could carry major implications for the number 1 overall pick.  If the Jets come up short in that matchup, it could ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise, potentially allowing them to secure the first overall selection in next years draft.
